Presented annually by American Sailing, the Outstanding Instructor recognition is determined through verified student evaluations rather than nominations or applications. Each year, American Sailing honors a select group of instructors through its Outstanding Instructor program. According to the organization, the recognition identifies the top 1% of its active-status instructors based on verified student surveys.
Unlike awards based on nominations, peer voting, or applications, American Sailing uses an objective algorithm to evaluate instructor performance. The selection process considers the number of surveys distributed to students, the number of completed surveys submitted, and each instructor’s average rating across completed evaluations.
Because instructors do not apply for the award and are not selected through nominations or peer voting, the recognition provides a student-driven measure of instructional performance.
American Sailing describes the Outstanding Instructor recipients as representing the top 1% of its active-status instructor community. For the 2025 award year, the organization reported 2,446 active-status instructors, of whom 850 met the applicable eligibility criteria. Thirty instructors were ultimately recognized as Outstanding Instructors.
Those thirty instructors represent 27 cities and towns across 14 states, provinces, or territories, and two countries, highlighting the broad geographic reach of American Sailing’s instructional network.
Captain Russ Beyer was selected as one of those thirty instructors, proudly representing Miami, Florida.

Captain Russ brings approximately two decades of sailboat ownership, extensive cruising experience, and more than fifteen years as a United States Coast Guard licensed mariner to his work as a sailing instructor.
He holds a United States Coast Guard 100-Ton Master, Near Coastal credential with Sail and Auxiliary Sail authority, and his experience includes both monohull and catamaran sailing throughout South Florida, Biscayne Bay, the Florida Keys, the Bahamas, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands.
Over the years, sailing evolved from a personal passion into an increasingly important part of his professional life. His experience encompasses coastal cruising, vessel systems, navigation, weather planning, anchoring, docking, sail handling, passage preparation, and the practical decision-making required to operate cruising sailboats safely.
Today, his greatest satisfaction comes from helping other sailors develop the competence and judgment needed to confidently assume command themselves.
Before founding Miami Sailing School™, Captain Russ built a career spanning approximately four decades in executive leadership, business transformation, entrepreneurship, strategic planning, and organizational development. His professional experience included senior leadership roles with major corporations as well as high-growth and entrepreneurial organizations.
Throughout that career, he coached executives and teams, developed people, led complex organizations, and helped businesses navigate growth and change.
That experience continues to influence the way he teaches sailing today.
His instructional approach emphasizes patience, clear communication, structured decision-making, and adapting instruction to each student’s experience, learning style, and objectives.
That leadership background is particularly relevant aboard a cruising sailboat, where effective command requires more than technical skill. It also requires sound judgment, communication, situational awareness, risk management, and disciplined decision-making as conditions change.
Captain Russ combines extensive sailing experience with professional credentials that support his instructional expertise.
He holds a United States Coast Guard 100-Ton Master, Near Coastal credential with Sail and Auxiliary Sail authority, is a Certified American Sailing Instructor, and holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA).
His teaching philosophy extends beyond completing certification requirements. Students are encouraged to understand how and why sailing techniques work, recognize changing conditions, evaluate risk, communicate effectively with a crew, and make informed decisions aboard a cruising sailboat.
