A U.S. Coast Guard licensed captain and Certified American Sailing Instructor, Captain Russ brings decades of sailing experience together with an extensive background in leadership, coaching, and professional development.
His approach to sailing education emphasizes hands-on learning, practical seamanship, sound judgment, and the confidence required to take increasing responsibility aboard a sailing yacht.

Owner and Head Instructor
Captain Russ Beyer is the owner and head instructor of Miami Sailing School™ and a 2025 American Sailing Outstanding Instructor, an honor recognizing him among the top 1% of active-status American Sailing instructors based on verified student evaluations.
A U.S. Coast Guard licensed captain and Certified American Sailing Instructor, Captain Russ combines extensive sailing experience with more than three decades of senior leadership, coaching, and organizational development experience across Fortune 100, high-growth, and entrepreneurial companies. He holds an MBA and brings the same disciplined approach to leadership and professional development to every course he teaches on Biscayne Bay.
For Captain Russ, sailing instruction is about much more than completing certification requirements. His goal is to develop sailors who understand their boats, make sound decisions, communicate effectively as a crew, and possess the confidence and judgment to continue sailing independently.
His experience encompasses monohull and catamaran sailing, cruising, yacht systems, boat handling, seamanship, and the practical realities of yacht ownership and maintenance. His sailing has taken him throughout South Florida, the Bahamas, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands, while Biscayne Bay remains both his home waters and primary classroom.
At Miami Sailing School™, Captain Russ specializes in private, hands-on sailing instruction designed to give students meaningful time at the helm and direct responsibility for operating the yacht. Students learn by doing—steering, trimming sails, navigating, maneuvering, docking, anchoring, managing crew, and developing the situational awareness required of a capable skipper.
